About Department

Clinical Psychology Master’s Program at Yeditepe University has been designed to fit international standards. The program aims to enable its students and graduates to become competent at clinical assessment and evaluation as well as clinical research methods, with a thorough understanding of theories and applications of psychopathology and psychotherapy. Graduates of the program are expected to utilize their scientific knowledge and practical expertise in the welfare of the society. The program also intends to train clinicians who will be both conscious of the scientific and professional responsibilities and are devoted to the ethical principles and standards of the field.

Our Clinical Psychology Master Program involves a thesis. The first year of the program consists of an intensive curriculum that aims to invest in the development of theoretical and practical foundations. The program focuses on theoretical and practical education concerning both psychoanalytic-psychodynamic and cognitive-behavioral approaches. In the second year of the program, students will find the opportunity to gain and improve their skills as a clinician and psychotherapist through supervision, focusing on practice and intervention. During the second year, students are expected to design and conduct an original research and write a master's thesis.

CLINICAL PSYCHOLOGY MASTER PROGRAM WITH THESIS

COURSE INFORMATION PACKAGE

Objective:

In recent years, there is an increased need for well-trained clinical psychologists in our country. Regarding this fact, Yeditepe University Clinical Psychology Master's Program is an international education program designed for filling the gap. This program aims to graduate clinical psychologists who are competent in psychopathology and psychotherapy theories as well as practices, clinical assessment, measurement, and research methods. After their graduation, it is expected that those clinical psychologists contribute to public health by using their scientific knowledge and professional competencies. In addition to being aware of their scientific and professional responsibilities, those students are trained to follow ethical principles and standards strictly. The program includes two approaches, which are psychoanalytic-psychodynamic and cognitive-behavioral theory, and also practice training. The program is based on the scientist-practitioner model. Thus it is designed to provide the students with advanced level training that will enable them to use the necessary skills required in clinical settings as practitioners and to apply research methods as academicians.

Goal: Yeditepe University Clinical Psychology Master Program is a master's program with a thesis. The first year of the program consists of an intensive curriculum that aims to give enough information about theoretical knowledge. In the second year, students are taught to use psychotherapy skills effectively through a series of supervision targeting intervention of interest. At the same time, it is expected that students design and conduct an original scientific research to write their master's thesis. After completing the requirements of this program, graduated students are expected to become clinical experts who have awareness and insight about themselves with the continuous observation, recognition and understanding, feel a sense of responsibility for the development of professional knowledge and competencies through their lifespan, follow and update scientific expertise in the field, and adhere to ethical values ​​and principles.

Program Learning Outcomes

1. Regarding their level of competence gained in undergraduate education, to increase their knowledge and skills in depth to become an expert in clinical psychology.

2. To be able to realize the importance of interaction with other disciplines related to clinical psychology and to integrate theoretical knowledge and practical skills of those disciplines with the existing ones and use them efficiently.

3. To be able to conduct psychotherapy with ethical principles, scientific and professional knowledge

4. To acknowledge various psychotherapy theories in a historical development from past to present.

5. To recognize both fundamental and advanced psychopathology theories

6. To have sufficient knowledge and skills to conduct clinical assessment and evaluation

7. To identify research methods and to be able to use some skills to manage an independent scientific research process

8. To be able to review literature, collect data, evaluate critically and make appropriate analyses for conducting an original research and having national and international publications.

9. To gain knowledge, skills and experience to be competent for managing the process of therapy, suggesting solutions for invisible problems and, making an action after completing individual and group supervision.

10. To be able to have a broad knowledge of theoretical issues and current research in clinical psychology and have a critical perspective

11. To be able to use clinical knowledge and skills gained in the program to produce scientific research within the framework of ethical principles; to use that knowledge and skills for social awareness and individual responsibility.

12. To be able to use technology, informatics and communication tools effectively required in clinical psychology and to follow the latest developments about them.

13. To be able to speak and write English efficiently, to follow the literature and to be productive academically.

1. The degree to be taken

Upon completion of the course load and preparation and the defense of the thesis project, the students will receive a Master's degree in Clinical Psychology.

2. Admission Requirements

Students who wish to apply to the master's program and register upon acceptance following the evaluation process should qualify for the initial requirements and evaluation processes that are determined by YÖK based on the academic and legal regulations of the university. Admission requirements, evaluation process, and acceptance results will be announced at the website of the Institute of Social Sciences before the beginning of the academic semester.

3. Employment Opportunities and Higher Degrees

Employment opportunities are available in academic and clinical practice. Since the program involves writing a master’s thesis, students will also be able to apply for a doctoral degree program.

4. Graduation Requirements

Upon successful completion of the theoretical courses, the students are eligible to graduate if they are successful in applied courses and clinical supervision as well as the process of carrying out, writing, and defending their master’s thesis.

CURRICULUM & COURSE CONTENTS

PSY562 Advanced Psychopathology

In this course, the cognitive and psychodynamic conceptualization of psychopathology will be investigated. Particular emphasis will be placed on cognitive and various psychoanalytic schools, etiological factors, personality and developmental organizations. Students will acquire a basic psychodynamic and cognitive understanding to use in case formulation.

PSY501 Advanced Research Methods I

In this course, students will learn various research methods and statistical techniques in psychology, their theoretical foundations and their practical applications. This course will enable students to think about research questions, understand research designs, evaluate related ethical issues, and present them in a proposal letter to the ethics and scientific committee commissions. Upon completion of the course, students will be able to design and conduct research in an applied environment, critically evaluate existing research publications and reports, understand ethical issues in research, and discuss the contribution of studies to the science of psychology.

PSY 565 Clinical Assessment

The purpose of this course is to develop necessary skills in psychotherapy (observation and interview techniques, communication skills, active listening, body language, notice and interpret nonverbal signs like facial expression, questioning techniques, summary, confrontation and interpretation techniques, constitute and report a developmental and diagnostic formulation).

PSY 566 Psychological Assessment I

This course will enable students to learn to apply, score, evaluate, interpret and report Rorschach and Thematic Apperception Test. The student will gain these skills through participation and application in regular supervision.

PSY 588 Seminars I

The goal of these seminars is to introduce students the ethical and professional issues. There will be several case presentations along the course which are prepared and presented by graduate academic staff and clinical psychology practitioners. Students will be continuing these seminars for two years and enroll in a Seminar course every semester to improve their critical thinking skills.

PSY 589 Seminars II

The goal of these seminars is to introduce students the ethical and professional issues. PSY 502 Advanced Research Methods II

This course aims to go beyond the research and statistical skills taught in the first semester. Students will work on a research project. After considering a research question and preparing a research proposal during the semester, they will be able to present a research paper by the end of the data collection and data analysis stages.

PSY 567 Psychological Assessment II

This course aims to provide the students with the necessary knowledge and skills related to the application, scoring, evaluation and interpretation of the results of specific tests, including intelligence tests and other cognitive assessments. Students will learn to apply these skills under supervision.

PSY 573 Psychopharmacology

This course will provide an overview of psychopharmacological treatments, their primary classifications, indications, contra-indications and side effects. This course aims to introduce how psychological problems affect brain functioning, emotional, cognitive, behavioral and motor effects and their pharmacological treatments in the context of clinical psychology.

PSY 698 Clinical Practicum I

In the second year of their education, students gain experience in clinical practice for both semesters. This practical course provides students with the opportunity to observe psychological disorders in the clinical setting (psychiatric units of hospitals and psychological counseling and research center of the university), and then apply the techniques of interviewing, psychological support and intervention they have learned to their clients.

PSY 691 Group Supervision

During the second year, students meet with a clinical supervisor in small groups on a weekly basis. They present the detailed flow and narrative of the sessions with their clients in the psychotherapy processes to their group peers and clinical supervisor. The focus of this course is to note appropriate records and develop the basic clinical skills necessary for the psychotherapy process.

PSY 693 Individual Supervision I

Each student has a clinical supervisor. Students meet with their clinical supervisors on an individual and weekly basis to discuss and evaluate their cases.

PSY 695 Psychological Assessment Supervision I

Each student will be given two inclusive packs of personality tests and two inclusive packs of intelligence and cognitive functions tests during the second year. Students receive group supervision through applying, scoring, interpreting and reporting the results of these test and evaluation processes.

PSY 685 Master’s Thesis I

This course consists of planning and conducting a thesis research, including defining a research topic, problem and essential variables, creating research design, doing sufficient literature review and writing an introduction, developing a hypothesis, doing the field study, data collection, data analysis and thesis writing. A thesis supervisor and thesis committee supervise each student's thesis research. At the final stage, the student is expected to defend the thesis successfully to the thesis supervisor and thesis committee.

PSY 699 Clinical Practicum II

In the second year of their education, students gain experience in clinical practice for both semesters.
