Course Objectives: 

This course is a scientific preparation course about communication and media theories principles. Media theories, communication models, human communication and mass media are the main subjects of the course.

Course Content: 

This course aims to provide the students with the principles of human communication and visual communication. It is designed to give a general approach to communication theories, communication models as well as to media theories. It provides students with human communication and mass communication theories in order to enable them understand its essential role in visual communication design. Students are also expected to gain familiarity with general visual communication topics through researches and class presentations.

2 Theories of Communication; studying and defining communication, different models of communication.  
3 Themes in Personal Communication; intrapersonal communication, self and self-concept.  
4 Communication Contexts; interpersonal, intercultural, small-group, large-group, public, organizational, mass communication.  
5 Mass Communication and the New Technologies; the audience, the communication experience, feedback process and ethics in mass communication, mass media theories.  
6 The verbal communication, the non-verbal communication; definitions and categories.   
7 Cultural Theories of Communication; culture in social theory, culture as an ideology.  
8 Mid-term Exam  
9 Cultural Theories of Communication; culture in social theory, culture as an ideology, Dürkheim’s theory.  
10 Cultural Theories of Communication; structuralism and the semiotic analysis of culture, study of Claude Levi-Strauss, Roland Barthes, Michel Foucault, Jacques Derrida, Pierre Bourdieu theories.  
11 Cultural Theories of Communication; the production and reception of culture, study of media effect, culture as text, narrative and hermeneutics, narrative and social process, psychoanalytic approaches to culture and the self, postmodernism and postmodernity.  
12 Crictical Approach to Communication Studies; Marx-Frankfurt School and discussions  
13 Research / Final Project; Presentation in class.
